What is the essence of creating a popular site? Of course, in a fashionable and relevant design! Any project begins with design in general: commercial, non-profit, amateur or highly professional.

I wrote many times that the web design master must be creative, must look for new solutions to everyday situations, keep an eye on fashion … But unfortunately, fashion is a fast-changing product, and what seems innovative today becomes tomorrow’s consumer goods, it spreads to the masses, is copied 100500 times, and, finally, it becomes boring. What to do? We are looking for the answer in this article 🙂

The golden rule of design says: if the site is more than 2 years old, it catastrophically asks for updates! In a good way, the improvement of the site should never stop. In the process of daily testing, you need to work on bugs, constantly speed up pages, ease the load, tighten new technologies, increase efficiency.

But if it so happened that the designer’s hand did not touch the site long enough, then a redesign or update awaits him. On what scale, we will deal with this now.

As a rule, such articles about the need for site design changes are not written for designers (we all understand that updating is oxygen for the blood vessels of the project), but for customers, so to speak, users. The terrible word “redesign”
You will not believe it, but that is how most sites respond to the offer to upgrade. I would say, for many, redesign is associated with going to the dentist: “Well, maybe he will tolerate it?”, “Maybe he will stop junking himself?”, “Maybe it’s not so bad?”

Do not tolerate! Do not stop! Poorly! Do not lie to yourself! Sorry for being rude, but this is exactly the case when softness and shusi-pusi are only harmful. Here are a few reinforced concrete situations where salvation does not come on its own:

After a sharp take-off, the site stood in the positions of search engines, froze on one indicator of attendance (albeit at a relatively rather large one).

Pictures are loaded in parts and longer than 3-5 seconds.

The number of broken links has exceeded 5%.

Users complain about navigation and cannot find elementary blocks on their own.

There are many errors and empty links in the database.

The brand is many years old, and its recognition is still below the plinth.

The business has expanded its niche and is moving on to capture a new target audience.

The resource is outdated, its pages use irrelevant names of goods and services, slogans from the last century, phrases-killers of uniqueness “we all know”, “it’s no secret to anyone”, etc.

I don’t want to intimidate anyone now, but prevention is always better than repair, and repair is better than modernization. And if the site needed modernization, then do not spare the energy for it, all the costs will be paid off by the growth of vital signs. The easiest solutions:

The site will be saved from obsolescence by expanding the thematic niche and providing new services.

From a low indicator of presence (length of stay of users) – high-quality linking of pages and updating content.

From a high bounce rate – updating the navigation and the main page.

From a boring presentation – image redesign.

Well, well, the decision that the site design needs to be changed is made. Move on.

I advise all the work on the website redesign to be divided into these two areas. We immediately refer to cosmetic partial editing of the site, well, for example, of some pages or just the main one. I offer you some tips for developing a cosmetic redesign:

Compliance of the content / theme of the site with its visual design. No need to pull everything from the Internet. A pile of pictures, hackneyed photos, banners is no longer relevant. If the photos are better than their own; if the video is better unique.

Design Templates. Until you understand the design template device in detail, do not rush to create your own masterpieces. There are (do not confuse the stress!) Ready-made versions of sites are relatively inexpensive, as a rule, they are well thought out in detail. You can use the entire template, you can uniqueize it. The biggest plus – you already have a layout of the future site, it remains to coordinate it with the customer and that’s it.
