Popular web design software with raster and vector graphics

From the author: for the successful design and creation of sites you will definitely need special programs for web design. There have been tons of new applications lately, but which of them really increase the productivity of a web designer? In this article you will learn how to choose the right program for creating a website design, depending on the task and the type of graphics – raster or vector.

As various venerable designers say, “the brain and hands are our main tools.” And yet, they are a little cunning. Is it possible to create a website design without using any programs and tools? Of course, the brain is a powerful biocomputer that allows you to draw a complex picture and an ideal site in seconds, but, alas, only in your imagination.

To translate your brilliant thoughts into reality, you will need modern graphic editors. In my opinion, one of the most pleasant features of a web designer’s work is the ability to independently make decisions about which programs to use for web design, for example, to build and layout site pages, optimize graphics, create banners, etc.

The main classification criterion for all graphic editors is the type of graphic. Just in case, we will understand these fundamental concepts for web design.

What are raster and vector graphics?
Every self-respecting web designer should be sure to understand these terms. Images in raster graphics consist of pixels – indivisible units that create a kind of mosaic. The pixels are very small, so the eye perceives the mosaic as a single image.

The main advantage of raster graphics is the ability to create a drawing of any complexity, while applying any number of various halftones, plug-ins and filters. GIF raster format makes it easy to create animations.

Vector graphics are common in print design and website layout design. This type of graphic cannot convey tones and midtones, however, it is more preferable when it comes to creating texts, simple forms, contour figures.

Vector programs for website design use the principle of creating a contour on a coordinate system, which is a workspace. Any figure in such a system is described by the coordinates of the control points that connect the segments and the characteristics of the fill (color, pattern, gradient). In other words, a vector image is, first of all, a mathematical formula.

To understand what type of graphics this or that image belongs to, pay attention to its extension:

raster graphics – JPEG, BMP, PICT, GIF, TIFF, PSD, JPG, PNG, PCX;

Vector graphics – EPS, PSD, CMX, CDR, SVG.

Choosing a graphical editor
Raster editors (Adobe Photoshop, Corel-Paint, Irfan View, GIMP, Krita, etc.) represent the graphics in pixels, the number of which is set in width and height when creating the image. An increase in the size of already created raster images is undesirable – this can lead to distortions and uneven graphics;

vector editors (Xara, Corel DRAW, Adobe Illustrator, Sketch, etc.) provide for the creation of lines and shapes according to certain mathematical algorithms, so that vector images can be scaled as much as necessary without loss of quality and perfect clarity of the contours. Vector programs for web design are recommended for creating logos, emblems, etc.

Adobe firmly holds its position
The most popular graphic editor for working with raster graphics for many years is Adobe Photoshop. Initially, this application was developed for processing and retouching photographs, but then it went beyond the framework prepared for it and became a convenient tool for working with web-graphics.

Not everyone knows, but in Photoshop you can work with vector graphics, for example, create vector objects or add them from other programs, for example, Adobe Illustrator. The latter editor is still more preferable for working with vectors. In it, you can create any images for a website, mobile devices, video, print, animation, etc. Adobe Photoshop interface:
